The Jane Bingham Playwriting Prize
January 25, 2007
The Black Swan Theater announces a new production prize for a full-length play concerned with the spiritual element in human life.
The first annual Jane Bingham Prize offers $500 and production for a play deemed by the reading committee as the most compelling testimony of the intermingling of the artistic and the spiritual. “Spiritual” does not mean particularly Christian, or necessarily even religious, but what the playwright can successfully present as a revelation of or an experience in the life of the soul.
The Jane Bingham Prize is co-sponsored by the Black Swan Theater and the Cathedral of All Souls, and is named after a loyal, humorous, and open-minded patron of the arts, and a woman of deep and unselfconscious spiritual gifts.
Submissions to the Jane Bingham Prize will be accepted BY MAIL ONLY until September 30, 2007. Submissions must be accompanied by a $20 processing fee, checks made out to Black Swan Theater. Submissions should be sent to:

Performance Space
Black Swan Theater has recently encountered an exciting performance
space in downtown Asheville. We'll be planning a project
to introduce the space to the public (it will be open to
all),
so stay tuned.
It will probably be summer before things are ready, but
we're very
excited, and look forward to a space to augment the fine
reading space generously provided by the Asheville Area
Arts Council.
I'll be in Tobbercurry, Ireland, for the Tobbercurry
Theater Festival. If there's something wonderful, I'll
see if I can bring
it back, as once we brought the intriguing Dark Places
back from Dublin. -DBH
